POSITIVE=20 BEHAVIOR SUPPORT

PURPOSE

The=20 Educational / Juvenile Justice Act requires each parish and school board = develop=20 a plan for improving behavior and discipline in each school. To address this requirement = each school=20 has developed a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program designed to = reward=20 students for following school policies and procedures as well as = promoting good=20 choices in behavior.

Students,=20 parents, teachers, and administrators serve on the PBS committee to = determine=20 expectations and rewards. = The=20 committee meets monthly to analyze disciplinary data, develop plans to = address=20 student, teacher, or parent concerns, and to plan for positive behavior=20 recognition/rewards. = Students and=20 teachers are surveyed often to evaluate the current action plan, rules,=20 expectations, rewards etc.

Home and=20 school communication is highly promoted through the school=92s monthly = newsletter,=20 school website, school marquee, teacher websites and newsletters, family = nights,=20 and an open-door policy.

PBS=20 EXPECTATIONS

Our=20 school counselor met with all students during the first few weeks of=20 school. All students were = given an=20 Abita Springs Middle School PBS booklet, and rules, expectations, and = rewards=20 were discussed.

REWARDS

Students=20 are rewarded daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and each semester. Students were surveyed to = determine what=20 types of rewards are important to them. Our students wanted passes to = cut in=20 line, skip a homework, purchase ice cream, free dress, help a teacher, = and eat a=20 snack in class. When = students are=20 caught exhibiting Warrior Expectations, they are rewarded with Gotcha = Bucks that=20 may be used to purchase these passes.

Each=20 month students who achieve Perfect Attendance for that month are = rewarded with a=20 free dress day on the last school day of the month. Each nine week period all = students who=20 have no disciplinary referrals for that nine week period are treated to = a reward=20 chosen from the suggestions made by the students. These rewards have included = free=20 smoothies and extra recess time, snacks and a scavenger hunt, hot = chocolate, a=20 cookie and a trip to the neighboring park, and a walking field trip to = the=20 neighborhood snowball stand. = Each=20 semester a party is given for all students who have not received a = disciplinary=20 referral for the entire semester. =20 These reward parties have included a pizza party and sock hop and = a=20 party, in which students were able to learn line dancing, decorate their = cookie=20 snack, make an art project, and play board games. All principal=92s honor roll, = honor roll,=20 Climbers Club, and Student of the Month students are recognized each = quarter at=20 a rewards ceremony.

PEACE=20 EDUCATION

Peace=20 Education is a program that is being introduced this year to parents, = students=20 and faculty members. This program believes in teaching children the = skills they=20 need to find creative and constructive ways to settle conflicts before = they=20 escalate into violence. Peace Education empowers students to become more = responsible decision makers and citizens. Students will participate in = Peace=20 Education activities each Friday. In an effort to promote peacemaking = skills in=20 our homes, we have also ordered each family the companion book to Peace=20 Education.
